When you focus on the surface is that you'll see what's happening, of course, and that's always a good start. How swiftly is the person moving in the direction of their goal? How steady is the sword, how surprised the horse may seem to be at the headlong rush. And this really is a good start. It's the physical reality, the answer to "What's happening right now?" The thing about it is, though, the surface observation necessarily misses something. It misses whatever the original plan might have been. It misses the reasons - the why - behind what's happening right now. It misses what got us to this point. Look a little further back, into the past or toward the horizon, and you'll see just how strong the headwinds are, and how much the knight is overcoming just to move forward at all.
